The Intensive                      (Click here for a FAQ sheet)

What is it?

The intensive is a f ive to fourteen day intense individual instruction includes two riding sessions, or, if requested, three, including a work in hand session each day. Riders in the intensive program focus on every aspect of equitation, and design their own program to explore areas of particular interest.  We have great school horses for you to learn from, and with Craig's approval you can also sign up for independent practice sessions.

When is it? Scheduling your intensive

We will arrange the intensive at a date and time that is convenient for you. If you would prefer to study primarily with Craig himself you may need to book your time well in advance, as his clinic schedule limits his time at home. The "staff intensive" is somewhat less expensive and it's more flexible on scheduling, as we're always here. In the staff intensive you'll ride with Craig's on site instructors and assistant trainers, Mary Anne Campbell and Sam Cochrane. If Craig is home during your intensive, you'll still have access to watching him ride and train, and you'll be able to ask any questions you'd like during your stay.

What will I be doing during the day?

The intensive at NSAE is just that-- intense. Between sessions, riders will be watching Craig and the staff working client's horses in training sessions, they'll observe both Craig and the staff teaching lessons, as well as boarding clients practicing and professionals course students working with their horses. You'll be riding, reading, watching, asking questions and generally digging in to the experience of being on site in a classical barn where the horse comes first, each time and everytime.

We have a comfortable classroom or (when the weather permits) an out door deck where you can relax between sessions, and books and DVDs you can purchase that help illuminate the work being done. If you haven't attended a clinic with Craig we do recommend that you order a copy of his DVD "Dressage History and Practice" to review before your intensive in order to familiarize yourself with the ideas we'll explore when you are here.

How much does it cost?

For the first five to seven days, each day you will ride a minimum of two sessions. Each session is $95, or $190 per day. If you schedule your intensive with staff members only, the cost is $75 per session, or $150 per day. Additional lessons can be scheduled, and we can add sessions during your intensive if you decide you would like to do that. (Professional trainers and instructors are given a courtesy discount, please mention if you are in that category.)

What level is required for this course?

The program is designed to suit the individual rider, and so it is appropriate for riders of any level, from any discipline or background. We work just as happily helping to get the novice rider safe for trail work as we do polishing the Grand Prix champion.

Beginners will find the intensive has an amazing effect on their balance and confidence in the saddle as well as giving them a truly useful set of building blocks to take home with them as they develop their understanding of riding.

Intermediate to Advanced level dressage riders will find the seat work establishes a sense of balance far beyond what they had experienced previously, and that the deep, concise work on the aids makes a huge difference in their abilities at home.

Where will I stay?

The Seattle area is known for its beauty, and we have several recommendations for good places where riders can stay while studying, as well as fun places to visit and explore off site. There are several low to moderately priced motels, a bed and breakfast, and a marvelous upscale spa retreat all within 10 to 15 minutes of the barn. In the summer, weather permitting, some hardy participants stay on site, camping in our classroom or in our pastures. There is a small fee for use of the electricity and water.
