Participants get up from the couch and out from behind a desk and develop a sense of their bodies in space, they work up a sweat doing something fun and working as a team member. Get a little dirty! Bump your head! Skin a knee. This is outside play, it’s not virtual and it’s definitely going to require play clothes. Maybe even pack a change! Many of our riders came originally to study a beautiful old form of equitation with Mary Anne or with her late husband Craig, but they stayed with the work because that form draws out in them, and in the community around them, something unique. Though the original farm, National School of Academic Equitation and the farm we opened after we lost Craig, Blue River Farm are both now just memories, the community lives on in the work we do together and in the teachers who are supported by the Foundation for the Equestrian Arts. The thing that makes French Classical work so beautiful is that each rider and each horse becomes, in their own way, a perfect conversation: each horse has his or her own personality, way of moving and tendencies in dealing with the world. In the same way, one rider may be more of an intellect, another more of a charismatic showman. One rider may be more analytical, another more sensitive, another positively woo-woo: when the rider has been taught to balance profoundly and listen deeply the horses respond to the person and the person to the horse, and the result becomes a specific poetry of the moment between two engaged minds. So while her students benefit from the decades of intense study that Mary Anne has put into her equitation, they also benefit from the lovely quality of being invited to bring their whole selves to the table. And as a community of riders we all benefit from the passionate commitment and dedication that staying in touch, being part of a world-wide group, brings to the community of riders who work this way. And yet, the only real authority as to whether this is good work or not is the horse itself. So listening is the first requirement. Each rider brings their own unique poetry to that conversation, so there’s no one right fit for any of the people who come to study here, any more than one right fit for any of the horses. In teaching riders, in training horses: we love to listen. At events, seminars and clinics you’ll meet people who truly enjoy their horses and are supportive and encouraging to one another as well. Based on the teachings of classical French riding masters, the instructors teach the basics of balance and movement with the horse, and then continue to build on that toward a riding experience that is light and beautiful with a finesse that is truly unique. She also studied with Susie Schramm who ran a marvelous kids program called “Once Upon A Horse”. Both taught Mary Anne about working well with horses and their people— and about not taking it all so seriously. She held a position as manager for a few years for a fellow who was importing high-end show jumpers and learned to navigate the world of the international equine importer, the show circuit, the breeding world and the ins and outs of warm blood registries. During this time she studied with a Tom Dorrance protégé, Dave Williams. The next adventure was putting together her management and equestrian skills to run the Lake Oswego Hunt Club riding school. Then in 2004 she met and began studying with Craig Stevens. The world of French Classical Dressage opened up to her— and she had found home.
