lessons and INTensives

RIDING LESSONS: My place or yours? Lessons can be scheduled at the Aumsville Oregon barn on school horses or you can haul in. Mary Anne also will travel to teach at your own barn. Both the Portland and Seattle areas are routinely on her circuit for teaching, and other locations across the US and Europe are welcome— just reach out through the contact page.

ONLINE OR VIRTUAL lessons are available anywhere in the world, and Mary Anne is experienced and skilled at teaching virtually.

INTENSIVES are just as they sound: intense! This is a personal riding retreat, a time to focus with Mary Anne on developing your seat, your understanding of the aids, and your work with your individual horse. The intensive is basically a personal clinic given at Aumsville on the school horses here, or at your location.

CLINICS AT YOUR SITE can be arranged anywhere in the US through contacting us here, as well as in Europe and Australia. Contact Mary Anne to discuss your options and interests.

DRAWING LESSONS for students of equitation or simply people who want to see better. Drawing was an important element in the education of the classical trainer in bygone days. The reasons are still cogent today. And many riders love to draw. Mary Anne’s college degree was in Fine Art, and she can teach you to learn to see what’s in front of you (useful for diagnosing gait and health concerns) and to playfully develop your ability to replicate that vision.

Contact Mary Anne to arrange lessons where it works best for you.

Theory, seatwork, classical aids and practice: it’s all part of the intensive.

In the us and abroad

Classical equitation clinics at your own barn.

Clinics with Mary Anne Campbell introduce and develop French Classical ideas at your home barn. Work in hand, longe work, the delightful seminal practice of Mediterranean Horsemanship, the art of timing, the art of feel… clinics based on one particular old master’s work, or around one particular gait or transition. There’s lots of fun potentials when you’re working with Mary Anne Campbell and the French Classical tradition.

Working with horses includes much more than riding.

ground work, work in hand & horsemanship

Being able to work the horse effectively and safely and joyfully from the ground is a critical skill and one that can be a lot of fun on its own. Learn classical work in hand, longe work, and the beautiful connecting base of the classical approach called ‘Mediterranean Horsemanship’, as well as the basics in equine body work. All of this supports the horse throughout its work, from starting a colt to developing a great riding horse to polishing a finished horse… and then to support your friend in a healthy retirement. Not to mention supporting the rider! You don’t have to ride to be ready to enjoy a lovely day with a horse on a regular basis.

There are methods of working the horse from the ground that support a life-long relationship with a healthy, focused, balanced horse. And as Winston Churchill once said, though we’ve just slightly paraphrased it: “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a person.”

Mary Anne also works with her riders to learn the nuts and bolts of what it is to care for a horse. From online courses on conformation, breeds, colors, history, and more… to seminars on specific trainers from antiquity or basic bodywork, to on-line or at your facility seminars on buying, housing and feeding a horse, we love these animals and we love the people who work with them. Got a curiosity about some aspect of horsemanship we haven’t mentioned? Just ask. Mary Anne is delighted to teach all things equine.
